Overview

Stephen Hopper was admitted to practice in 2001 and has over 22 years experience in court advocacy.  His practise is focused on all aspects of criminal law including bails, applications, Section 14 applications, experience in serious traffic matter including dangerous driving involving serious injury or death, violent crimes, sex crimes, weapons and firearms, drug supply and manufacture, fraud, manslaughter and murders. 

Stephen conducts jury trials in the District and Supreme Courts with a high success rate.  Recently, Stephen successfully conducted the first jury trial at Norfolk Island in over 17 years.

Stephen also has a substantive practice in Family Law in both parenting and property as well as conducting care and protection matters.

During his career as a lawyer Stephen has been instructed in some of the most significant human rights case in Australian history such as the case of Mamdouh Habib, together with numerous people subject to search warrants by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, such as successfully litigation after ASIO had entered premises without the authority of a search warrant.

In regard to the case of Mamdouh Habib, Stephen conducted a local and international political campaign via the media and instructed counsel in the United States that involved a successful law suit against then United States President George W Bush that rose to the US Supreme Court.  Mr Habib was freed from Guantanamo Bay by the United States without charge in February 2005.
