Martin Shume joined Denman Chambers in 2003 after having been on 2nd Second Floor, Selborne Chambers since 1997.
In 1982 Martin joined the New South Wales Police. Martin transferred to the Police Prosecutions Unit in 1984 and travelled around NSW as a Police Prosecutor as from 1986. Over the next 11 years Martin worked in most country Local Courts and all metropolitan Local Courts. He spent two years in the Children’s Courts at Minda, Lidcombe, Bidura, Sutherland and Cobham Courts. He spent a further 3 years at the State Coroner’s Court as Counsel (Sergeant) Assisting. During this period he specialised in industrial and aircraft incidents.
As a Senior Police Prosecutor, Martin prosecuted major frauds, was part of a specialist sexual assault team and worked for 3 years within the team responsible for the majority of committals in the State in various murder and manslaughter charges.
In 1995 Martin commenced working for the New South Wales WorkCover Authority in the Occupational Health and Safety Prosecutions Section as a litigation lawyer. He remained in this role for a period of 3 years where he practiced in the Local and Chief Industrial Magistrates Courts, the Coroner’s Court, the Industrial Relations Court and the Supreme Court of New South Wales. During this period of time he was also seconded to the Cash in Transit Inquiry conducted by the NSW Industrial Relations Commission to supervise and co-ordinate an investigation team attached to the Inquiry.
Martin Shume has established himself at the Bar as one of the pre-eminent senior juniors in OH&S. Martin has been able to do this using his background in criminal law and his lengthy exposure to industry including mining, timber, metal, factory, chemical, electrical and manufacturing. His expertise in industry and criminal law allows him to easily transition to a number of other areas of law including government and prosecutions in the areas of health and environment.
Martin Shume practices in most States of Australia and appears in Federal jurisdictions in areas of related work.
He also specialises in inquest and inquiry work including the Glenbrook Inquiry and a number of high profile inquests, including a jury inquest.
