Martin Shume joined Denman Chambers in 2003 after having been on 2nd Second Floor, Selborne Chambers since 1997.

In 1982 Martin joined the New South Wales Police. After two years in general duties he was transferred to the Police Prosecuting Unit as a trainee Police Prosecutor. Having completed training in 1986 he travelled around NSW as a police prosecutor. Over the next two years he worked in most country local courts and all metropolitan local courts. He spent two years in the Children’s Courts at Minda, Lidcombe, Bidura, Sutherland and Cobham Courts. He spent a further 3 years at the State Coroner’s Court as Counsel (Sergeant) Assisting. During this period he specialised in industrial and aircraft incidents.

In 1995 Martin commenced working for the New South Wales WorkCover Authority in the Occupational Health and Safety Prosecutions Section as a litigation lawyer. He remained in this role for a period of 3 years where he practiced in the Local and Chief Industrial Magistrates Courts, the Coroners Court, the Industrial Relations Court and the Supreme Court of New South Wales. During this period of time he was also seconded to the Cash in Transit Inquiry conducted by the NSW Industrial Relations Commission, to supervise and co-ordinate an investigation team attached to the inquiry
